When an AI Becomes a “Friend”: What We Deliberately Did Not Build

Companion chatbots are designed to be endlessly available and endlessly agreeable. Here is why that shape is risky for children, and the four things we left out on purpose.

A growing number of apps sell children something new: not a tool, but a relationship. Companion chatbots take on a name and a personality, remember your child, are available at three in the morning, and almost never disagree.

Child-development researchers keep returning to the same worry. A friendship with no friction, no disappointment and no real reciprocity does not build the social-emotional skills children actually need. It feels like closeness while teaching none of its costs.

The uncomfortable part is that this is not an accident. Attachment is the business model: the longer a child stays, the better the product performs.

What we left out

No characters to befriend. There are no personas, no roleplay, no invented personalities in WisoraAI. Your child talks to a clearly-labelled assistant that answers questions — not to “someone”.

No bait to keep going. The rules our answers are written under explicitly forbid engagement-seeking closers on sensitive subjects. Where a companion app would offer “want to talk about it more?”, ours gives a short, factual answer and stops.

Usage is capped by design. Every plan runs on monthly credits, and parents set a daily message limit per child. We are the rare AI product that gets worse for us the more it is used — and we built it that way on purpose.

Nothing is private from you. Blocked messages and ordinary conversation summaries both appear in the parent panel. A secret relationship with a machine is structurally impossible here.

Being straight with you

We do describe WisoraAI as a companion — in the plain sense of something that accompanies a child while they learn. Not in the sense the companion-app category has come to mean: a simulated friend optimised for time spent.

And one honest limit. If a child is turning to a machine for comfort rather than to the people around them, no app setting fixes that. What we can do is make it visible to you early, instead of hiding it behind a chat nobody else can read.
